One of the biggest issues in Christendom today is trust. We fail to trust God, and we fail to trust others. I admit that not everyone deserves our absolute trust. In fact I'd suggest that no human deserves our absolute, unquestioned trust. However, God does. He never fails, never lies, never sins, never does wrong. So let me ask you this. Why don't you trust Him absolutely for ALL things?
And don't say that you trust God absolutely. You don't. Nobody does. Even the best Christian doesn't. As much as we should, we don't. So why is that? Well, I'd like to offer a suggestion that might help in that area. I believe that reason we don't trust God in everything isn't that we don't believe He can do anything. It's that we don't believe God will do everything our way.
To be totally honest, I'm glad God doesn't do everything my way. This world and my life would be a total train wreck if that were true, and at the same time God wouldn't be God. He'd be our slave. We are not greater than God. He is greater than us. So why do we fail to trust God? Again, I go back to my previous statement. We fail to trust God because we're afraid He won't do things our way.
Let's use a recent example from the severe storms that are ripping the nation apart this year, and I'll tell it in parable style to protect the innocent. Anyhow, the story begins with a young couple out west. They had great jobs, a nice house, a nice car, a great income, and so much more. They were devout Christians who went to Church every Sunday, tithed regularly, and were model believers. Everything was storybook perfect for them up until one stormy afternoon when a tornado visited their town and flattened most of it to the ground.
Their house (and need I say, most of the town) was wiped off the map, with some structures even being stripped clean down to the slab. In only a matter of a few minutes a picture perfect postcard town ceased to exist. So did the couple trust God through this experience? Yes. At least at first. Did their trust last? Needless to say, no.
Why? Well, when the tornado hit and their house was obliterated, as well as their car and everything else they owned, their trust died within them. Why? Did God fail them? No. Their trust failed because God didn't do what THEY wanted Him to do. The same is true with us. Too often we trust God only so long as He does what we want. If we are honest with ourselves we should always remember that God's ways are above our own, and therefore light years greater and better than our own.
Isaiah 55:8-9 (KJV) - "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts."
So the next time God asks you to trust Him, don't just trust that He'll do what you want, but that the outcome will be what He wants. Sure, go ahead and ask Him for the outcome you want. God even tells us to do that. But when you do, always remember that when you ask Him for something, you need to trust that He knows what's best for you and that the outcome He chooses will be the best one for you. After that remember to praise Him for the outcome, no matter what it may be. If you do that you'll have a trust that can move mountains.
